Healthcare

Who we are
GS1 Healthcare is a neutral and open community bringing together all related healthcare stakeholders to lead the successful development and implementation of global GS1 standards enhancing patient safety, operational and supply chain efficiencies.

Manufacturers & Distributors
Using GS1 barcodes to record data in clinical systems improves speed and accuracy of data capture, enables clinical decision support, and improves traceability and recall of medical products.

Healthcare Providers
We partner with all healthcare providers to guide the implementation of GS1 standards in their systems to allow speed and accuracy of data capture, enables clinical decision support, and improves stock management and free up time for care management

Solution Providers
We partner with solution providers to guide the implementation of GS1 standards in their systems to allow automated data capture and data exchange in both supply chain and clinical systems. As a solution provider, you have an opportunity to be part of healthcare’s transformation to offer solutions that support GS1 standards.
Standards in action
Point of Care Scanning
Point of care scanning leveraging GS1 standards helps minimise medical errors, leading to improved patient safety.
Recording data in Clinical Systems
Using GS1 barcodes to record data in clinical systems improves speed and accuracy of data capture, enables clinical decision support, and improves traceability and recall of medical products.
Recall
The ability to identify products to the batch or serial number using GS1 standards facilitates more efficient, accurate and targeted recalls.
Traceability
GS1 standards improve traceability, visibility, and helps prevent falsified and substandard medicines reaching patients.
Master Data
Accurate product data, exchanged using GS1 standards, leads to improved patient care and more efficient procurement, warehousing and payment activities.
Supply Chain Management
Efficient supply chain and inventory management based on GS1 standards creates visibility, ensures the required inventory levels, and can reduce waste.
Accessing Online Information
Accessing digital information online leveraging GS1 standards helps receiving relevant information , minimise medical errors, leading to improved patient safety.
Master Data Creation
Trusted product master data can be an enabler for safer and more efficient patient care.
Reducing Medicines Waste
The use of GS1 standards for supply chain visibility can help us care for the environment.
Unique Device Identification (UDI)
GS1 is an UDI issuing agency or Entity for many UDI regulations worldwide, including in the European Union, Brazil, China, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Türkiye and the USA. Manufacturers or labelers can therefore use the GS1 standards to comply with UDI requirements from these jurisdictions.

Embracing serialisation by driving adoption beyond compliance mandates
As countries explore serialisation mandates, Johnson & Johnson leverages its robust GS1-based program to protect vulnerable markets and products globally…

Tracing insecticide-treated bed nets to the last mile using global GS1 standards
Nigeria has the highest malaria burden globally, with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) being crucial in reducing transmission. However, traditional manual data collection methods for ITN distribution were prone to errors and lacked real-time tracking, leading to inefficiencies and accountability issues in ensuring nets reached intended households without being lost, stolen or diverted.

Enhancing medical device logistics at The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, China
Manual coding in SPD management poses risks of errors like incorrect labelling, leading to medical hazards.
Public Policy in healthcare
Using GS1 standards in healthcare enables verification of the patient’s identity, product verification ensuring that the right patient receives the right medication and supports efficient product recalls by linking the medical product to the patient.
